ARCHIVE NEWS - CPhI Brussels a "Resounding Success"

In December 2004 a team from Pentagon attended CPhI in Brussels, the foremost international exhibition for the Pharmaceutical and Fine Chemicals sector with over 1400 companies displaying their products and services and almost 21,000 visitors attending.

In addition to re-inforcing the Pentagon brand, one year on from the Halebank acquisition, this was also the perfect opportunity to launch our new literature and specially-designed exhibition stand.

Allan Laing, CEO, who attended the exhibition, pronounced the 3 day event a ?resounding success? resulting in orders being won, and numerous new project enquiries to be followed up - so much so that we have recruited additional chemists!

Pentagon is now firmly established as a leading name in fine and specialty chemical manufacture and we will continue to build on our excellent reputation.

To this end, we are looking forward to exhibiting at CPhI in Tokyo, Japan (20-22 April), ChemSpec in Dusseldorf, Germany (22-23 June) and CPhI Worldwide in Madrid, Spain (1-3 November) during 2005.

ARCHIVE NEWS - Pentagon Invests in Wiped Film Evaporator

Pentagon is pleased to announce a new capability at its Workington, UK site. The company has invested in a Wiped Film Evaporator (WFE) to allow short residence time distillation of heat sensitive materials. Once the project is complete, to include crude and product storage tanks, the investment will have exceeded £1million.

The plant is constructed from 316L Stainless Steel and has a ?2m² evaporator area with a 9.2m² condenser. The plant can be run at temperatures up to 300°C.

The project was initiated to supply low colour alkenyl succinic anhydrides but is also capable of distilling a range of other materials. The commercial plant is backed up by a lab scale WFE rig, to allow assessment of projects prior to scale up. The WFE will be used for toll manufacture work as well as Pentagon's own product ASAs. Currently Pentagon is operating a number of processes where crude starting material is manufactured for clients prior to distillation, in addition to which straight toll distillation projects are welcomed.

Pentagon is an independently owned UK company, operating on two sites in the UK. Technologies include Phosgenation, Sodium dispersion, Grignard, Bromination and Chlorination.

ARCHIVE NEWS - Pentagon Acquires Fine Chemicals Capability

The UK based independent chemical company, Pentagon Chemicals (Holdings) Ltd, today announced the acquisition of Great Lakes Chemical Corporation's fine chemicals business based at Halebank, Widnes UK.

Pentagon Chemicals (Holdings) presently operates a wholly owned subsidiary, Pentagon Chemical Specialties, from a manufacturing site at Workington, Cumbria. The strategic rationale behind this acquisition is to extend Pentagon's present capability in both contract manufacturing and own products marketing. The existing product range includes benzoic acid salts and esters, biocides and surfactants, maleic anhydride derivatives and Grignard reagents. The contract manufacturing business primarily draws on its reaction capability and raw material handling strengths in benzyl chloride, maleic anhydride and Grignard chemistry.

The acquired Great Lakes fine chemicals business has a strong synergy with the Pentagon vision and will trade as Pentagon Fine Chemicals Ltd. Commenting on the acquisition, Alastair Lloyd, Pentagon's Sales & Marketing Director, said, "This opportunity secures all of the strategic needs of our business, including a blue chip customer base in the fine chemicals market place, a diverse range of technology and a pedigree of technical and operational excellence which is highly regarded in the industry. We look forward to working with our new high calibre employees and to taking the integrated business forward during challenging times. We are confident that this acquisition is an excellent fit with our requirements and that the new group's ability to meet the ever-changing needs of customers will be enhanced."

The group will continue to be administered by the present Pentagon Board and will be funded through a combination of shareholder capital and bank lending. Grant assistance from the North West Development Agency will also help to finance the project.

Allan Laing, Pentagon's CEO, said, "The directors believe that raising finance without private equity allows us to focus on growth without being distracted by exit plans. We were fortunate to have secured Pentagon's independence by this method of funding some 18 months ago, as well as employing it for this exciting acquisition. It is our intention that both our customers and employees can look forward to a long term and stable future with us."

The Halebank site, which has its origins as the former Ward Blenkinsop business, has seen a number of owners over the years, including Shell. Great Lakes Chemical Corporation acquired the site in 1992. Pentagon intends to secure new long term relationships with Halebank's existing customers and to focus on growth through high profile marketing and new business development. Commercial and operations management will be highly integrated, as is required by businesses with a balanced portfolio of contract and product sales. World-class manufacturing initiatives will be pursued to minimise costs. The integrated businesses will provide greater market coverage across a wider range of customers from which both should benefit.
